6. How do I find court cases that cite to state statutes or revised code?

VersusLaw provides searchable state statutes and revised codes for states across the U.S. including Florida, New York, California, New Jersey, Illinois, Arizona, Oregon, Colorado, Pennsylvania, and Nevada. Access to state statutes, revised codes, court rules, state constitutions and other state content is available through VersusLaw’s Premium and Professional Plans.

To locate court decisions based on statutes and revised code, you need only enter the unique statute or revised code number in the search query box. For instance, searching for a reference to a statute from the Revised Code of Washington having to do with possession of a firearm, one would enter 9.41.040 (for RCW 9.41.040) in the search query box. Without additional search terms or a date range limit, this search will produce more than 200 statute documents from the Revised Code database. Editing the search to include only statutes from the last 10 years and amending it to include “unlawful possession” and any form of “previous conviction” –

9.41.040 and (unlawful possession) and (prev* w/5 convict*)

will produce a more manageable list of 105 statutes.

All state content, including statutes and revised codes, is revised and updated on a regular and frequent basis.
