7. What are the most useful connectors to learn? If no connectors are employed, the search engine assumes the default operator, ADJ (adjacent). For example, in searching for “drug test” (quotation marks excluded), the search engine assumes each word adjacent to the other in that order. Both searches below will produce the same results. drug ADJ test drug test AND – All of the connected search terms must appear somewhere in the same document. cocaine and possession and test OR – Allows for alternative words to be searched. One of the words must show up in the document, but any combination or all of the words could show up as well. (cocaine or drugs) and possession and test w/n – Controls for number of words in between the search terms (where "n" is any number). cocaine w/5 possession See the Search Operator Guide for more details and examples.
